Open The Sets

AN URGENT APPEAL TO ALL STAR TREK FANS!

For those of us who are Star Trek fans we are able to do many things. We are able to buy whatever memorabilia we want. Design and wear any of the costumes we choose. And yes, if you own a VCR you are truly capable of watching Star Trek 7 days a week. Yet sadly however there is one thing we cannot do. Which is visit the Star Trek sets!

The members of the Pittsburgh based Star Trek Fan Club, USS Potemkin would like to see this changed On May 30, 1994, we launched a letter writing campaign to Paramount Pictures. In the effort to get the Star Trek sets open to the public for tours.

As Star Trek fans we share a collective history, and letter writing campaigns have been instrumental in guiding that history.

  • In 1968, The Save Star Trek Campaign in which NBC received over One Million Letters-subsequently keeping the show on the air for its third season
  • In 1975, then President Gerald R. Ford, changed the name of America's first Space Shuttle to Enterprise. This was the result of a massive letter writing campaign.
  • And from as early as 1973, a continual deluge of letters urging that the show be brought back.

Just think, had the fans of the 70's listened to those people who asked, "Why do you waste your time on a show that was canceled in 1969? Get on with your life, Star Trek is Dead!" Imagine how things would have been. There would not be any conventions. There would not be a series to watch on television every week. Not to mention and most importantly, the last seven Star Trek Motion Pictures (with the eighth on the way)! startrek.htm of this would have ever happened. Simply put, it was the tenacity of the fans who would not listen to those negative voices and not let the show they love die.

With our campaign we are asking the fans be allowed to see the Star Trek sets. We are not asking for permission to go roaming through them, just simply be allowed to see them. We are asking that the sets be opened only on hiatus, allowing the film crew to work uninterrupted by the presence of tours.

A previously scheduled tour was to be held on December 2, 1995. However it was unexplainably canceled. Which illustrates the point, if you could go to Hollywood right now--You could not get a tour and that is what this campaign is all about. With our campaign we are asking Paramount Pictures, "Will you allow the Star Trek fans to see these sets by opening them for tours?" But to you we ask, "Will you add your voice to this campaign by sending in just one letter." Because just as it has happened in 1968 and 1975, it all begins with your one letter!

Some words of advice:

  • Do not put the words "Star Trek" on the envelope else it will go to fan mail department.
  • Be polite
  • Remember, if possible, original letters always count more than form letters!

Here is a sample letter to consider:

Paramount Pictures Corporation
5555 Melrose Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90038

Dear Paramount Executive,

For many years, the STAR TREK sets have been closed to the public. I am asking that the sets be opened to the fans for tours. Many of the fans have spent tidy sums of money trying to obtain the numerous items associated with STAR TREK. Fans travel hundreds and sometimes thousands of miles to attend a STAR TREK event, such as a convention.

Paramount Pictures' own previous successes should demonstrate our own willingness to come closer to the STAR TREK phenomenon. As you know, STAR TREK enjoys overwhelming public response wherever a STAR TREK event is being held.

The Smithsonian Institute Star Trek exhibit in 1991, was extended several months due to overwhelming public response. Since 1988, Universal Studios-Hollywood, has given fans a unique opportunity to become part of the Star Trek Adventure. The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry "Star Trek - Federation Science" gives the fans the unique opportunity to view the various props and costumes, while also educating the public about space travel. Back by popular demand, Paramount theme parks Star Trek Earth Tour has landed for a second year. The success of these various projects pales in comparison to the response that would be generated by opening the sets. Having been to many exhibits and events, if Paramount Pictures would open the sets, I would be willing to attend a tour.

Many people hold as one of their dreams is to sit in the captain's chair. I request that the sets be opened not while they are in use, but when the series goes on hiatus. It is my fervent hope that you will realize this unique opportunity. If so, many devoted fans will realize their dream to visit your sets!

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
